New practice fields were added for Gill. A new fitness facility was added. A new indoor practice facility was added. Let us not act like KU has done nothing for football.

I am going to tell you right now that, if Alabama had the same record and the same lopsided, destructive losses over the past 13 years, their stadium would be just as empty. We have had the worst football program in the country. The fact that anyone shows up is a testament to the commitment of KU fans when it comes to football.

The disrespect for KU football has largely been manifested through the hiring of successively dumber and more incompetent administrators who, in turn, made a series of the worst possible hirings in the history of college football. Over and over and over. It wasn't the firing of Mangino, it was the hiring of a mildly successful replacement. It wasn't the firing of Gill, it was the hiring of the recently fired Weis. It wasn't the firing of Weis, it was the hiring of ill-equipped Beaty. And it wasn't the firing of Beaty, it was the hiring of Miles who was clearly mentally impaired. Is there anything more disrespectful to KU Football than this nonstop lackadaisical approach to selecting a coach?

People are disinterested in KU football because there hasn't been a single interesting thing about it in over a decade. If you have a freshman in high school in your home, they have literally never seen a competitive KU football team in their lifetime.

I don't know that I understand the point of this column. The program has been so mismanaged by millionaires that basically no one cares anymore. Wishing, hoping and praying isn't going to fix it. You regain support the same way you lost it - one game at a time.

I noticed NC State is No. 11. Too bad that coach wanted the KU job so bad that it turned off the former, former AD.

Also noticeable in the poll: Wake, Kentucky, Arkansas, Pitt, NC State......all in the top 25. None have any significant advantages over KU when it comes to recruiting or the potential to succeed. Yes, they may have a little more homegrown talent, but they all are competing with big-time programs when it comest to recruiting.

Leipold's approach reminds me of Mason. Coach L is using the connections he has, in the places he has them, to get players right now. The question will be whether he can establish a recruiting footprint somewhere, somehow for the long term. With three Texas schools still in the conference, Texas could still be in play. But a message has to be developed that resonates with 3-star kids who would like to come North. Or maybe you become the summer camp miners - finding the nuggets that others miss. It's a heckuva challenge.

Bottom line, life isn't getting easier on the football front. But we literally have the first fully competent football staff since the Mangino era. So there is hope. Looking forward to a much-improved season.

As a reminder, winning the state in recruiting is like winning at weightlifting. It's not and never should be the goal. Who really cares? We cling to this idiotic goal because it's some sort of imaginary victory.

If we land 25-ish 3-star recruits on a regular basis, develop them and do our jobs on Saturday's, we will compete. Everything else is a major distraction. As fans of KU football, one thing we can do is to quit asking coaches to do something that has absolutely zero impact on winning.

That third-to-last paragraph really hits it. Of course, Daniels must play well to keep his job, but that three-game stretch to open the season is pretty important. So sending a message to the entire team, so that they can settle in, is a good way to go.

You just can't help but like Devin Neal. He is truly a unique individual with an imaginative and optimistic outlook on things. And he's a heck of a running back. Really glad we have him, and looking forward to much more from him. I will not be surprised to see him in the league one day.

Sanctions anyone? Anyone?

Thrilled to have Jeremy Case. Best change on this staff in a long time.

I think this is big. Ideally, we would have had him here for the spring, but as a sixth-year guy, I'm guessing he picks up things quickly.

brettmccabe (Brett McCabe) says...

Not sure how to respond. We have an actual, real football coach in charge of the football program. Unchartered waters for KU.

Intrigued to see how Daniels grows this year. It's clear that he is working very hard to move his game up a level - that's a great sign, and a good step towards setting the tone and being a leader for the team. Two returning quarterbacks with real-game experience, being coached by the same staff, and running the same offense. How many times have we been able to say that during the "troubles"?
