Mike, is that because they're dew on the grass in Okie land?

These six (some games, 7 or 8) have played together so well on offense all season, are now putting together some defense(s) that keep games against top-rated teams within reach – and their 'reach' in crunch time can be awesome to witness.

Wishes from heaven:
- Stronger focus from Carlton in longer stretches;
- More 'unsung hero' moments from Mitch and fewer 'Memphis' fouls by Coleby;
- Better anticipation by Svi on defense to compensate for the half-step he lacks in
quickness;

You know, Joshua has been very circumspect about taking over games all season. Today, with Frank slowed more with what other players would call injuries, Devonté just holding his own, Svi starting a step slow, there was a real need for all the dominance Josh could muster tip-off to final buzzer. Yes, he played all 40 minutes of that physical game. That is why I applaud Benton's use of the "Mason impression" phrase ... TOUGH what that beloved senior gives us every game.

So much of his offensive production was due to clearing the boards for a put back or passing out to a teammate for second-chance points. This against a front line of 3 220# scrappers who pretty much curtailed Landon's and Carlton's rebounding.

Remarkable bball smarts, judgement and maturity for a just-turned-twenty player. Defer to the upperclassmen as long as the job is getting done, and unleash his talent when it's really needed.

This is Bill Self's first freshman phenom I would give my left hand, my right shoulder, and either testicle to keep around for another year! Wiggins was maybe as talented, but always careful to avoid the possibility of injury.

Those "good recruits" who slip away are often ones we'd be just as well off without. Coach Self doesn't let ESPN or RIVALS do his selection of who to go after hard. He is nearly as good as Coach K at the process of recruiting a TEAM rather than a bunch of kids with high school resumés. How many of the highest winning % over the last 14 years belong to someone who doesn't play very many games in the Phog?

Suspended or not, Carlton Bragg has nothing positive to offer his team, considering the discombobulated circumstances of his own life.

It seems unlikely (to me at least) that he'll recover an attitude and level of effort in time to contribute much this season. Sad situation, but not really a travesty – just necessary to screw the head down a lot tighter.

KU62 (John Randall) says...

It is too much to expect team members to coerce better behavior on the part of younger players. Passing along lessons learned is as far as they should go. No one, even coaches, can do someone else's growing up for them. Whenever it's tried we see worse development in almost every case.

Well stated, Mike.

Toughest around seems overstated – but for one game, it was tough enough! These guys get better all season at pulling up from inside their well of talent more effort than we thought they had remaining. Believing the result will follow from that effort gives every Jayhawk – coaches, players, fans – what we call "tradition" and so many victories it gets harder all the time to keep count.

I hope KU Athletics produces a CD of all the conference games this year.

Agree, Marius. It just feels like her boss (Tom, or someone higher) wants to protect her, and is carrying it to extremes. She writes well enough, without interjecting much (or any) commentary or personal interpretation. "Just the facts, ma'am; just the facts" is usually the best way to deal with such matters.

As the 'newbie' she may feel a need for the separation of not weathering half-thought-out, knee-jerk tirades this site produces in plethora. That separation could turn out to be a double-edged sword, if the shoot-the-messengers attackers among us build up resentment for being muzzled. Getting her feet wet like others have done may build the stronger, more resilient reporter despite the temporary pain of disparagement.

Would really be gratifying to see these two have a positive impact. Aside from their disadvantage in experience, they both seem to have enough talent and gonads to contribute in short stints of meaningful play.

One or both could make the Baylor front court seem less like world beaters.
