Shooting Woes

The Jayhawks currently rank last in the Big 12 in field goal percentage in league play at 31 percent. In their last two games, they have shot just 26 percent from the field. In fact, the Jayhawks have only shot better than 40 percent from the field once and below 30 percent seven times since the beginning of conference play.

Hustle plays

Kansas has been able to somewhat offset its shooting struggles by forcing turnovers and hitting the offensive glass. The Jayhawks rank first in the Big 12 during conference play in turnovers forced per game (19.5) and turnover margin. Kansas’ plus 5.1 turnover margin is significantly better than Texas at plus 2.5, which is second in the league. The Jayhawks also rank third in offensive rebounds at 13.3 per game.

Junior Jessica Washington continued her impressive run of scoring in Big 12 play with 22 points in Kansas’ loss to Texas Tech on Saturday. Washington has scored in double figures in 20 games this season, including 14 of her 15 games in conference play. She leads the Big 12 in scoring during conference play at 19.5 points per game, and third for the season at 16.9 points per game. She’s also shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc in conference play, which is the sixth best mark in the league.

Sophomore Kylee Kopatich has still managed to score seven or more points in each of the Jayhawks’ last four games, but she’s done so in spite of poor shooting. She’s shooting 13-of-46 (28 percent) from the field in that stretch, which is well below her season average of 36 percent.
