5-star point guard Trevon Duval commits to Duke

The long and drawn out recruitment of five-star point guard Trevon Duval ended Monday morning with a video and an announcement that surprised nobody.

Duval, the No. 4-ranked player in the Class of 2017 and the top point guard in the country according to Rivals.com, confirmed his intention to play his college basketball at Duke, giving the Blue Devils another impressive piece in a stellar recruiting class.

Landing Duval gives Duke the No. 1 ranked point guard, shooting guard (Gary Trent Jr.) and power forward (Wendell Carter Jr.) in the 2017 class, per Scout.com, and also gives the Blue Devils the point guard they desperately needed.

The addition of Duval bumps Duke's 2017 recruiting class up to No. 2 in the nation, right behind, you guessed it, Kentucky's stellar class that includes seven of the top 28 players.

Duval's announcement came via a video released by The Players Tribune. In it, he chronicled his life in basketball, from birth to this decision. There were no hats, no television special and no actual images of Duval himself. Just him doing a voice over on an animated video titled "Hungry and Humble," which ended with his commitment.

"Next year, I'm going to be playing basketball at Duke University," he said. "I'm excited to evolve as a student, as a basketball player and now, and forever, as a Blue Devil."

Of course he wants to go to Duke. Why would he want to play for a coach who can't get past the Elite Eight if he was playing a team of five cheerleaders when he can play for a coach who has won the national title five times and taken his school to 12 of its 16 Final Fours?

Yeah, and could only be the runner up in the National Championship game in 2012 with what media folks repeatedly said during the season is "Self's least talented team." And 2008 doesn't count, either. I saw an article awhile back comparing the tournament records of a number of coaches. Might open your eyes a bunch.

Yes, we have two Final Fours and a national title. But that's the problem. We have only two Final Fours and only one national title. With all the high seeds we've had, we should have been to the Final Four at least four more times. Self's Elite Eight record speaks for itself - at 2-5 (2-7 if you count TU and UI), he doesn't get the job done when it matters most. Last year especially was most infuriating. The NCAA Selection Committee gift-wrapped us a trip to the Final Four by letting us play virtual home games in Tulsa and Kansas City, we were up against an Oregon team whose top player was injured, and we still couldn't get the job done. That falls entirely on the shoulders of the head coach, and it's time we the fans demand more from him than what he's been giving us. Big 12 titles be damned; the Final Four is what counts.

You're still tasting your ignorant probabilities. Expecting Coach Self to perform better than the entire rest of the field combine. If we're going straight probabilities, he should have 1 more FF.

2 months, 1 week ago

Dirk Medema

So here's the basic probabilities:
There are four #1's and four #2's = 8 total per year.
There are 4 possibilities for the FF.
4/8 = 50%

50% is the perfect success rate if no lower seed team ever made it to the FF.

No lower seed team ever making it to the FF is not a realistic probability.

The reality is that if you count the total number of 1's & 2's that make it to the FF and divide that by the number of possibilities, the success rate of 1's & 2's is just under 30%.

Coach Self has made it just over 20% of the time, or one win less than the average for the field. 1 injured player less. 1 improbable bank shot less. ...

It's just counting and division, but apparently beyond Bryce's fingers and toes.

Two quick questions, Bryce.

1. Who has had more blue chip recruits? Cal or Self?
2. How many 'Ships does each have?

While you lament the loss of Trevon Duvall, "maybe" we ought to consider the level of coaching before we throw Self overboard.

I think this falls under the category of results we all expected...

That being said, as much as Bryce wants to fan the flames of discontent against Self and his record as compared to Coach K (the greatest coach since Wooden), I see this as more a commentary on where we stack up with our respective rosters. Our backcourt features a returning senior (D'tae), a rs sophomore that practiced with us for a full year (Newman), a junior contributor (Vick), a transfer eligible at semester (Cunliffe), and an incoming freshman (Garrett). That doesn't even consider the possibility that Svi returns further complicating minutes. Compare that with Duke who had no real PG last season, and lost several backcourt players through various reasons (left early/transfer/etc.) and there was an obvious need and hole for Duval to step into right away.

I know people will point to last season as a way for Self to put 3-4 ball handlers on the court at once to say we could have made it work with Duval. However, as Jesse Newell wrote in an article recently, I can't see small ball functioning and being effective without someone like a Josh Jackson on the roster, which we just don't have. Even then, we don't go to that lineup without the injury to Dok, so it isn't like Self was scheming for this when Josh signed with us. Vick isn't tall enough to defend the post, and Svi has the height but lacks the quickness or physicality (assuming he returns) to do it either. Everyone else is 6'5" or smaller in the backcourt which means we are likely going back to more of a traditional Bill Self high low offense with Preston and Dok playing the 4 and the 5.

Factor all that together and there just aren't the minutes available for Duval at KU as compared to Duke. He may be a great point guard, but we have a pretty stout lineup right now and should be well suited for another strong season. Personally, I'll take a senior guard over a freshman any day. RCJH.

This was pretty much expected, but I was still holding on to hope that he'd maybe pick Seton Hall. But good for Duke and Coach K. They would have been in a tough spot without him.

As for Bryce, I think it's best that we just ignore him. Nothing he says holds any credibility and he spends most of his time bashing one of the best coaches, if not THE BEST, we've had at KU. Let the only response to his madness be his own echoes until one day even they stop responding.

Why would he want to play for Coach K instead of Coach Self? Um, because . . .

1) Devontae Graham, Malik Newman, Marcus Garrett >>> Grayson Allen, Jordan Goldwire, Brennan Besser. Two words: PLAYING TIME

2) Frank Jackson and Luke Kennard to NBA, WITH agent >> still possible return of Svi. Two more words: KNOWN / UNKNOWN

3) Duval has grown up between New Jersey and Florida. Easier to stay put on the East Coast. Especially for just one more year. Two more words: HOME / AWAY

Side note: Duke has lost several notable players lately to transfer - Derrick Thornton, Chase Jeter, Semi Ojeleye, Sean Obi. Coach K is not immune to discontent.

Lastly, with Jayson Tatum and Harry Giles also headed to the NBA, Duke will be reinventing the wheel next year. Duval doesn't see himself as just a spoke in the wheel. With Coach K he'll be driving the Cadillac.

Bryce, what about this situation is so, so, so difficult for you to understand?

Why is so difficult for you to understand that no coach in this country has done less with more in the postseason than Bill Self? We've been seeded #1 or #2 ten times in fourteen years; we should have been in the Final Four six times at least and won the national title twice if not three times.

The original debate was over why Duvall chose Duke over Kansas (and others, by the way). I disagree with your assessment that the Elite Eight records of Coach K and Self had a lot to do with it. I believe it had everything to do with the reasons I stated. The record is what it is. Obviously fans differ on its significance. But this thread was only about its significance to Duvall.

Why is it so difficult for you to understand that Coach Self would have had to exceed the perfect probability of the field to achieve the standard you are expecting of him?

Coach Self is 1 E8 win shy of the performance of the field. It just seems worse because he is so consistently better than the vast majority of the alternatives. There are only 1 or 2 programs that even remotely compare to the success of his program year after year.

It's just math and history, but why worry about facts when you can spew nonsensical ignorance.

Lets be honest opinions are not facts so anything we say and post is subject to review. Recruiting to Kansas does pose problems for coast players. Self has that to overcome when coast players are being recruited. His decisions appear to realize that Duval was a long shot.
During this recruiting period most people felt that Duval was a Dukie.
With Graham and Newman hard to find another player to take their playing time. Even if Svi
goes pro with Vick and Garrett that is a tough group. Plus we are already over the limit unless
Svi goes pro.
Inside or bigs have limited experience and we hope some ring the bell and perform better than we project.

One of the things that people like Bryce feel to realize is what a tremendous accomplishment it is to reach the Elite 8. Self has done so in 7 of his 14 years at KU, which is outstanding.

People have arbitrarily made getting to the Final Four the be-all, end-all of great coaching achievements, but if that arbitrary standard had been the Elite 8 instead of the Final Four, everyone would be talking about what an amazing record Self has.

The other factor that Bryce and his ilk continually ignore is injuries. There have been so many times when injuries before the postseason have cost KU a golden opportunity at making a great tournament run.

Given our backcourt, I couldn't see Duval in a Jayhawk uniform. Not that he wouldn't add to it, but who are you going to push out? Could he unseat Devonté, not likely; Newman, how would that look and would it be possible; Vick, well probably, but then do you loose Vick. It's difficult to see where Duval would fit in and being a OAD, would you want to risk having only one experienced player in the backcourt the following year?

It may "just be the Elite Eight" but it's sure nice to get to that point on a consistent basis, and I think Coach would have made it work with Duval, but he's a short term solution to a problem you don't have.

Frank Jackson commits to staying in the draft. Done deal.

Duke had next to no back court before that, so it's a wide open field for him there. In fact, it might be just the opposite scenario as we have. I think they only have 1 *** G recruit for next year. Duval might find himself on an island more than once next year, or maybe even adrift.
