Who's in and who's out: KU football coaching search bracket down to 16 candidates

Just as University of Kansas athletic director Jeff Long, no doubt, has been able to cross certain names off his list of possible football coaches to hire, the program’s long-suffering supporters are weighing in on which candidates they would back at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

The fan base has spoken, and 16 potential coaching candidates have been eliminated from contention in KUsports.com’s 2018 KU Football Coaching Search Bracket.

Eliminated in Round 1:

Mike Locksley - Alabama offensive coordinator

Lance Leipold - Buffalo head coach

Bret Bielema - Former Arkansas and Wisconsin head coach

Mike Norvell - Memphis head coach

Butch Jones - Former Tennessee and Cincinnati head coach

Mike MacIntyre - Colorado head coach

Todd Graham - Former Arizona State and Pitt head coach

Ed Warinner - Ohio State O-line coach

Tim Beck - Texas offensive coordinator

Ken Niumatalolo - Navy head coach

Jeff Tedford - Fresno State head coach

Chris Creighton - Eastern Michigan head coach

Frank Wilson - UT-San Antonio head coach

Brian Bohannon - Kennesaw State head coach

Craig Bohl - Wyoming head coach

Dan Enos - Alabama quarterbacks coach and associate head coach

Only the most promising names survived. But now the choices start to get a little more difficult. Major Applewhite or Willie Fritz? Bryan Harsin or Matt Wells?

These aren’t easy decisions. Imagine how Long feels.

Here’s a look at our Round 2 matchups. Make your selections Thursday, before we move on to the Elite Eight on Friday.

Ok let's cut this group in half. I can guarantee you that not all of the coaches listed are intrested in the position for whatever reason. Some might like having their names listed for the reason to get an extension at their current university or to let other schools know that they are in demand. Also that KUFB is below their current situation or just not worth the headache. We need hungry not desperate.

I was hoping for Tedford. I think Mike Leach would be great turned around Washington State, develops quarterbacks, Big12 ties and would love to stick it to Texas Tech for getting rid of him. Doren would be great.

Doren would be my first pick as well. I'd be happy though with most of these names though as long as they're a proven head college football coach; no more failed coaches from bigger programs or assistant coaches for a while.

No for Miles. He left OSU without informing the program of his plans to move to OSU. He is close to retirement and has been out of recruiting.
Navy H C has a great resume but might have difficulty recruiting in Ks. BSU head coach would be a good fit

Doeren isn't on this list? I'm surprised. I wouldn't oppose Les Mlles as long as he agrees to stay for at least 5 seasons to get some consistency in the program so that when it is turned over to say, Doeren or maybe Leach in 2024 there isn't a drop-off. That's likely asking for too much, but if not Miles, I say Doeren as long as he has the right staff.
