Updates: Class of 2018 prospects sign with KU football as early signing period begins

The NCAA’s new December early signing period for college football began Wednesday morning, and once the prospects could make their commitments official, the letters of intent from transfers began rolling in for Kansas.

After five junior college players and one graduate transfer became the first six to send in their documents, KU added its first high school signee when Texas prep offensive lineman Jacobi Lott did the same.

The biggest moment of the morning by far, though, came when New Orleans prep cornerback Corione Harris, a four-star prospect attached with this KU class for more than 10 months, announced he will sign with the Jayhawks instead of Mississippi State — where his prep teammate and former KU commit Devonta Jason decided to go.

High school and juco prospects have until Friday to sign, but they don’t have to do so. Players can just as easily wait until February 7 for National Signing Day if they so choose.

Putting it off until then would allow many undecided players to further weigh their options and visit more programs before making a final decision.

Below is a rundown — which will continue to be updated through the day — of which players can officially be called members of KU’s 2018 recruiting class.

Benton,

Do you guys have access to the 2017 roster of only the scholarship players? I'm curious how big our senior class will be in 2019 with all these JUCO's. I know one or two of them have more than 2 years but just curious.

KU chooses not to make public whether certain players are scholarship or non-scholarship. If you remember the signing day press conference this past February, they went as far as to include and talk about multiple "signees" who almost certainly had to be walk-ons. Other guys are obviously scholarship players. But as far as an accurate number the best we can do is guesstimate.

Is it pretty typical for colleges to withhold that information? And is that a coaches decision, AD, or just the school policy?

I think most Power 5 programs would fall in the category of more up front on such information. Best I can tell taking this approach was the coaching staff's call.

Tom recently posted a breakdown of who we think was on scholarship for 2017: http://www2.kusports.com/weblogs/keeg...

Since there's an NCAA limit on scholarships, don't they have to be reported somewhere?

One advantage (complaint by other coaches) for teams like KU not in postseason is they can focus on recruitment while other teams are preparing or participating in a bowl. Would prefer playing in the postseason but hopefully Beaty's staff can make a push during this new early signing period while other coaches are still talking x's and o's.

So let me get this straight for every Juco player that you sign you're basically giving away 3 years an extra 3 years that you would have with a high schooler if he redshirted one year. So somehow giving away 3 years to a player x 9 or 10 Juco players please explain to me how this is a good thing. I don't care if Beaty signs Juco players maybe in the two three four or five range but the have Juco players in the double digits and not have it compared to what Weis did is incomprehensible. I know Weis kicked players off the team for various infractions 20 at a time but Beaty is still doing at least one thing that Weis did that didn't help the program in the least.

So in two years you will have to find a replacement for all of these Juco players instead of having these players on the team for four or five years you have to replace them every two years that's 9 10 11 12 or however many Juco players Beaty signs you have to replace them in 2 years. All I keep hearing on this board is that we don't have enough depth we don't have enough roster players or scholarship players, well if you keep signing Juco players how is that going to get any better? Beaty sycophants sound off.

I want to hear Benton and/or Keegan ask him directly later today or whenever the press conference is and reference what he and Zenger said when he first got here about 1) recruiting Texas 2) Keeping in state talent and 3) how high schoolers were the way to build a team, not JUCOs. JUCOS are the reason that Beaty came in with this "scholarship problem" and now he is doing the exact same thing! I want answers.

His response would likely be "Man, I love the kids we have coming this year. They're tough smart guys and daggum I'm proud of them." He wouldn't even address the question.

Basically, they could have had an "end-of-year" press conference and talked about December signees, but they opted not to.

Of course they did. Because Beaty doesn't want to talk about how he's bringing in a bunch of JUCOs instead of high school athletes...he's the worst.

Yes, Charlie Weis recruiting JUCOs is what got us into the situation we were in.................

Y'all are stupid and have no damn idea how recruiting works. Most of the time it's you saying "to my knowledge" or "I think" or asking Benton/Tom questions. Let all of this play out then address any problems you may have. There is no problem with bringing on 10 GOOD JUCO/Transfers if they can make an impact now. We clearly need a better defense and OLine and bringing in 25 kids who aren't big enough isn't going to solve that problem.

Do your research as to why KU was in a scholarship/player hole before you start blaming the JUCO recruiting in itself for our demise.

You could recruit 25 JUCOs every year forever and have a full roster forever.

Because I take KU Football very serious. I love College Football and have been following the sport ever since I was 8. Very annoying to see fans of my school posting like they know something that they don't.

I played JUCO ball, on a national championship team even, and I will tell you that relying on JUCO players will kill your program. There is a reason why they are there. 1. Not talented enough to be recruited out of high school. 2. Bad grades 3. Kicked off program because of actions and 4. Very talented, but people missed them coming out of high school. With all the scouts and scouting services out there, number 4 doesn't happen very often. The other 3 options are bad. Out of the 10 or 20 that Beatty signs from JUCO's, less than 30% will be Big XII caliber players.

The only three players to make all-conference this year Wise Armstrong and Dineen are high schoolers, name a Juco since Fish left that made a bit of difference for this team. People say well it's better to have a player ready to play now if he's a Juco rather than having a high schooler take 2 or 3 years to become ready this is an empty argument since none of the Juco players that we've signed and are now playing are making a bit of difference. For the Jucos we signed last year this will be their last year in the KU program let's see how many of them actually become a better player or become a bigger player for the program if that translates into wins.

Welcome to ALL KU football recruits! Most fans of Big 12 football programs would be excited about their new football recruits, but not Kansas fans! Gee, I wonder why we never get any highly ranked 4-star and 3-star HS school recruits. All you have to do is read all the negative posts by commenters here. If you're a KU football recruit, it takes a leap of faith and courage to sign under the present circumstances. Hopefully, 2018 will be the season where our KU football starts to turn around in the wins and loses column. Once again, the true KU football fans welcome you with open arms!

Yep, it's not the 3-33 record by Beaty or 12-72 record by Zenger. It's not the horrible coaching, terrible o-line play, bizarre play calling, missed assignments, 21 yards at TCU, 40+ point blowout after 40+ point blowout.. it's none of those things.

It's the fans fault we're not happy with a bunch of JuCo players (ahem when David Beaty himself said "Do it the right way. High school players growing in the program until they're seniors.")
