Once candidates for an athletic director's job are told they no longer are being considered, an announcement for the choice is not far behind.

The Kansas search for a new athletic director has reached that stage and an announcement could come as soon as this week, even today.

Since I can't find anyone who has told me that former Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has been told he isn't getting the job, he's my educated guess as to KU's replacement for fired Sheahon Zenger.

Long, 58, served as athletic director for University of Pittsburgh, where he hired Dave Wannstedt as head football coach, and at Arkansas, where he hired and fired Bobby Petrino and hired and extended Bret Bielema.

Arkansas fired Long last November.

I have a few questions Tom....

1.) Do you think it's in KU's best interest to hire a guy that was just fired?
2.) Who would be the ideal candidate in your opinion other than Jeff Long?

Also, I'm predicting Joe Parker (https://hawkjock.com/ku-ad-search-joe...). Not that I have any sources that he's even a legitimate candidate but figured I'd jump on the prediction train.

If I'm right, you buy the beers. If you're right, I buy the beers. What do you say?

Football wise this seems like a decent hire. Not sure how he qualifies to hire our next basketball coach but that decision will be so big that it will involve more people than just him.

this is an important hire....KU needs an AD who can get KU FB back on track and and least competitive...4-7 wins every year isnt a lot to ask for...but also, the next AD will be the one who has to hire Self's replacement when he steps down..hopefully in another 10 years

4-5 wins a year shouldn't be asking for much, and it isn't. Asking to be bowl eligible year after year...that's tough for many programs around the country. Don't know how I feel about this hire, hopefully he will get this thing called football back on track.

The KU Football Program is like a black hole in the NCAA Division ! Universe. Everything that gets near it is sucked into oblivion. I see Jeff's tenure as the KU AD as the opposite of his surname.

Let's just quit screwing around, name Bill Self AD, hire a bunch of competent assistants and let him continue with the BBall team and be an "consultant" to the Athletic Program. [Just kidding......well, maybe not so much!!].
