Jay, TV commentators, Fran Fra.. does all big 12 games. When he coached College BB teams his teams were lousy. That is one reason he left coaching and as a big12 Media Rep he has to praise Conference players. He still does not know defense now just as when he coached, but then you do not know. It would be nice that you expand your literary knowledge by reading other literature besides "chicken little" so you can use more adult contemporary paraphrases. As far as my coaching record the wins and many Championships speak for themselves. As Steve Corder wrote above "He (Self) is trying to put square peg into a round hole. He must get big!" That is a very wise statement. In case you haven't read, Self admitted he made errors in his decisions during several recent games. Daily assessments and evaluations of team and player production ,both positive and negative for team success are constantly ongoing. those who understand that want change when it is an improvement and those who just want the status quo remain stagnant with a vociferous chant towards the others of just see all the chicken littles. Without change for improvement the same frustrated, sloppy , play will continue with little or not success to achieve goals.

For Jay Scott, I remember very well that when I questioned KU's lack of Dotson's defense(as well as the rest of the team) after the Iowa St. game you countered by saying "Dotson covered Lindell Wigginton and was all over him all night". Obviously you were watching a different game because Dotson did not guard wigginton all night(Self had the players switching defense for all his players, except dotson. as Self stated ) but guarded nick weiler-babb all night, because of the damage Babb did in the previous Iowa St. game at Ames when KU lost by 17 points because of limited offense but mainly due to poor(at times none) defense. At the game in Lawrence, Babb scored 12 points and Dotson was on him all night. Also it is obvious you know very little about how to play defense including the different types used in certain situations. I could still " shut- you-down" on defense now. The only thing you know is Chicken-Little, because I do not think you are a true ku fan. When the team struggles, particularly as in lack of Road Wins(as now), true fans are realistic and aspire to improved play with some thoughts as to what appears(as all the players have stated including all the coaching staff esp. self) as the problems and a solution(s)to at least try.

The poor performance led to 2 games KU should not have lost, WV, and Tex. The same problems from those games and even very close games at home indicates the Coaches and Players are NOT focusing on the reasons for such poor play. As I stated before: 1st. poor defense-they do not move quick enough. They are usually behind the driver to the basket and they do not recover quick enough to hinder a 3-point shooter,(just look at the film). vick- if he is not scoring, pull him because he makes sloppy passes, soft and slow, and he certainly CANNOT play any defense. 2nd. Grimes is slow on defense and he is thinking too much on offense as he should be attacking the basket more. 3rd. Lightfoot is too light to be more physical as a 4 or 5 and he is SLOW. 4th. Dotson is improving on poor passing but he still does poor on drives to the basket for lay-ups. 5th. Moore has very little to contribute. 5th. Coach Self needs to assay different and more defenses, and place the RIGHT player-mix on the court at he right time. KU is not going to win the Conference Championship without making major interventions NOW. However, if play improves from those changes, they can still win the Post-Season Tour. Championship. For you neophytes, my background: I was a defensive specialist in 8th grade, and we won the City Basketball Championship(Tulsa OK), in Junior Year of High School, we won the State BB Championship and I was selected on the Tournament All-Star !st Team, then 2years of college ball(Our conference was the Missouri-Valley-which was the toughest conference in BB), after 2 surgeries for knee damage, I played 3 years for an AAU team that won the National Championship. I coached 22 years while refereeing for 24 years, and my real profession was a Registered Nurse with 2 College Degrees. Enough is said.

In reality, KU lacks BIGS(besides Lawson) to win games against teams with bigger, stronger, and more physical players. 1. Vick is inconsistent on offense. 2.He doesn't understand how to make a quick, crisp, and accurate pass.(he floats or lobs the ball which makes it easier to intercept). 3.His defense is abysmal at best. However, apparently that is no shame because NO KU player can guard in man-to-man defense. They are not quick enough because they don't move their FEET quick enough when the opposing player makes moves to the basket and they DON'T cover three-point shooters. Grimes is in the same category as Vick except he doesn't shoot as well as Vick. Dotson mad 3-12 shots tonight and he was 2-8 when he drove to the basket for a layup because he still doesn't comprehend the correct angle and softness to lay the ball off the backboard. Garret is getting much better and more aggressive on offense especially on outside shooting. His drives to the basket is good. However, at times he becomes lackadaisical on his passes. Lawson is GREAT. Agbaji will get much more playing time, the others it does not matter. To win the BIG 12 again they are going to need to become better on defense, rebounding, definitely free-throws and 3-point shooting, and then they will win as far as the sweet sixteen.

Great win, barely because at times they played OK and at other times they played not OK. Their play, in order to win, will have to get much more consistently improved all 40 minutes especially for: Graham, Lightfoot, and definitely Garrett. They continue to be sloppy or lackadaisical at times, passing the ball. At the end of the season, they should be more efficient. So far they have played their "B" game and now, if they really want to win, must play their "A" game. Thanks for the play of Newman, Dok, and Vick or we would have lost. Graham knows he really has to elevate his game like in the first Tournament game. Today he scored 8 pt., mostly from free throws, and had 9 assist and 5 turnovers. Overall, better defense especially against the three and much better team rebounding. Every one needs to rebound and be aggressive for the ball. However, Coach Self needs to adjust his defensive schemes to alternate between a Man-to-Man and a Match-Up Zone. This aides in rebounding and, more important, may help to reduce the fouls on Dok, Lightfoot, and De Sousa. He should at least try it sometimes. The next few teams are better than what KU has already played. It is imperative, in order to win, to improve defense, shooting free throws and rebounding. But if that transpires, KU could go to the Final Four. rock chalk

GREAT tournament KU. They all played as a team. No one slacked. Newman played as a top player. Graham, was of course, the ring leader to make sure KU did not lose. That is the reason he is the MVP of the Big 12. De Sousa is really advancing to become a top player next year. Vick even played well as did all the players. Amazing shooting of three point goals at 15 made and 55%. That is really fabulous. Coach Self made some alterations for the tournament and it made the difference. GREAT game plan COACH Self. KU is playing HOT right now and that is the position any team wants prior to the NCAA tournament. rock chalk!!!!. See you in Wichita.

KU will not win without Azubuike. They could not win even with him. It is ridiculous to practice as they did because, as stated earlier, their practices should have been shooting drills and walk throughs. Self will NOT change his poorly played Man-to-Man Defense. Lightfoot and De Sousa are no match for any opposing team. There still is lousy play with lackadaisical effort from Vick. No #1 Seed for KU in NCAA tournament. OU will not make the tournament even with all the hype about Trey Young. Self is gradually losing his aggressive edge in coaching. He NEEDS to change or adapt to different styles of play to counter poor team mechanics, but without Azubuike it really will not matter. Hopefully the remaining players with the addition of viable transfers learned some lessons and will be a much improved team on defense and rebounding. Thus we will have to wait till next year. rock chalk.

Vick plays too soft and does not hustle much of the time. Several of the players played soft without much hustle. They were never in the game both emotionally and physically. ku does not play man-to-man defense in any efficacious manner because they are too, too slow of foot. It happened the first time we played OSU. As bad and lackadaisical as they played the greatest travesty was the lack of effective coaching by Coach Self. KU can not stop QUICK guards as OSU has. He knew that. Then why not try a match-up zone with an occasional trap. He did not adjust to the play of OSU,the same poor behavior from him as in the first game against OSU. Whether KU receives a #1 Seed in NCAA tournament is superfluous. They will not play past the second round. Graham can not do it all. This is a reality check for KU. However, maybe there is another reason why KU lost both games to osu without changing the style and schemes of game 2 after the poor performance in game 1, and that is Coach Self just DID NOT want to beat his Alma Mater. None of you have thought of that. Duane

Once again poor play by all. to reiterate: defense is the key. then why is self not running a "match up zone"? Most of the KU players do not know how to run an effective zone, certainly not that display they showed in Waco. You protect Azubuike from fouling frequently while playing a man-to- man defense. He plays better while move in the middle of the lane. Lack of hustle by several players and none of the players, even graham, really know how to play man-to-man defense. what really bothers me is why coach self or assistants do not teach more effective and productive processes of defense. i think self is tired of fighting. ski has not shown up for the last 2 games and going to iowa state is going to be very difficult to beat them as we have played the past games. change is now for the coaches. several of the players just are not as talented as thought. maybe next year will be better. rock chalk

Steve and Joe you are right. In an analysis of the game or what did not go right or what did go wrong, FACTS A). first half poor defense esp. on 3pt. shots, no player not even Mason, played good defense. They all stood to far away from the 2 primary 3pt. shooters: Dorsey and Brooks B). Oregon players were more aggressive and hustled more in the first half which is where the damage was done. KU players looked and ACTED flat. That is execution but more poor coaching. c). Poor handling of the ball during the entire game. Too many lost balls, dropped balls and missed catching the pass. In the first half, some players appeared to lack interest and thus did not perform as well as they could. D). Too many excuses from the Coach and players about how the Duck's Match-up-zone affected KU's play. coaches should adapt to different situations, after all, that is one reason they are paid. Why didn't Self switch back and forth with a Match-up-zone of their own, a Triangle and two and then Man-to man defense. Our players in the first half looked tired, while oregon's were over flowing with energy. e). poor, poor shooting by KU and not all lack of scoring was due to the Match-up-zone. Poor Technique; too flat, too out of line body to goal(off balance), too slow and not taking the shot now, but making 3 more passes and taking a bad shot. players gone next year: Lucas, Mason(the best player in the country), t. Self= All Seniors, J. Jackson, he is NOT going to stay for another year even though it would help him improve on reducing his turnovers and shooting Free Throws, maybe Graham( he is not ready this game showed that) and Mykhailiuk(he needs more game time to improve his defense and rebounding with better consistency on his shooting). It doesn't matter whose names ku has for next year expecting that would take care of making the final four(which we should have done this year). They are NAMES but only until they compete in college games consistently with a high degree of productivity will we know whether ku has a chance of advancing to the final four. and nothing else. coach self must analyze his decision making in this game today, to identify areas needed for improvement.
