Kansas soccer falls at Harvard; Big 12 opener up next

The Kansas soccer team lost 2-1 at No. 19 Harvard on Sunday afternoon.

Magali Gagné scored the lone goal for the Jayhawks in the 66th minute of the game with her team trailing 2-0. The freshman's goal was unassisted and came after she pressured the Harvard goalkeeper and forced a turnover inside the goal box for a tap in score.

“I thought at halftime we made some adjustments and changed the formation,” KU coach Mark Francis said after the match. “We dominated the second half and created enough chances to win the game. I was proud of the kids. In the second half, against a very good team, I thought we dominated the tempo and the possession.”

After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Kansas owned an 11-6 advantage in the second half. Senior Grace Wiltgen recorded a team-high four shots in the match and senior Kailey Lane added three shots of her own.

Both goals for Harvard came in the first half — the first in the 32nd minute off a corner kick, and the second in the 45th minute just before the end of the first half on a cross through the box.

The loss dropped KU to 5-4-1 on the season and Harvard improved 6-0-1.

Up next, KU will head to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on No. 5 TCU in its Big 12 opener at 7 p.m. Thursday. The game will be available on Big 12 Now and ESPN+.

Didn’t expect that Harvard would be #19, and now we get to face #5 TCU. So tough.
