Three Jayhawks earn weekly soccer honors

Ceri Holland fires in a cross against Iowa Saturday night at Rock Chalk Park on Nov. 16, 2019.

Three Jayhawks earned national and Big 12 Conference weekly awards on Tuesday, following their season-opening, 1-0 victory over Texas last Friday.

Senior midfielder Ceri Holland, who scored the game-winning goal, was named national player of the week by TopDrawerSoccer and also earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.

In addition to netting the match's lone goal, Holland, a preseason all-Big 12 pick and native of West Yorkshire, England, recorded six tackles and seven interceptions against the Longhorns in Austin.

Both weekly honors were the first of Holland's career.

Junior Sarah Peters was named the Big 12 Conference's Goalkeeper of the Week after recording the 21st shutout of her KU career. And freshman defender Kate Dreyer joined Peters in earning honorable mention recognition on TopDrawerSoccer’s team of the week.

The conference weekly honor was the fourth of Peters’ career.

The Jayhawks will be back in action Friday, when they host Oklahoma at 5 p.m. at Rock Chalk Park.

Congrats, Jayhawks. Hoping there will be many more acknowledgements to come.

On a negative note, at least for me, there was no broadcast of the game call. I realize it was televised via ESPN, but not being a subscriber, I had come to rely on the audio play-by-play. Also, the live stats feed was down, and so was reduced to watching that on the Longhorn's website. Am crossing my fingers that the radio broadcast hasn't been permanently jettisoned.
