KU football loses commitment from prep wide receiver Keon Coleman

Kansas University football recruiting

Previously one of the top prospects in the Kansas football program’s 2021 recruiting class — and a would-be walk-on for KU basketball — Keon Coleman announced Tuesday evening he no longer plans on playing for the Jayhawks.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4 high school receiver from Louisiana, wrote in a note posted to his Twitter account that it was a hard decision to reach, but he wanted to reopen his recruitment.

“I rushed into my decision and will be looking for a new place to call home for the next (three to four) years,” Coleman shared, adding he will be “exploring all options.”

Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals, Coleman sent his nonbinding verbal pledge KU’s way during an Independence Day live stream this past summer, picking Kansas over Oklahoma and South Carolina.

He’s currently ranked the No. 61 overall receiver in the 2021 class by Rivals, and the 11th-best prospect in the state of Louisiana.

Coleman backed out three days after KU lost to Oklahoma State, 47-7.

The Jayhawks now have 20 of their 25 spots in the upcoming recruiting class occupied, with 18 of those belonging to three-star prospects.

All verbal commitments, of course, are nonbinding. The earliest that Class of 2021 football prospects can sign is Dec. 16.

Major loss. He would have arrived just as we were starting to come together and would have been a big player in the turnaround. Hurts to lose him.

One problem we are going to have as we dig out of the biggest hole in our history, is demonstrating a strategy for winning. Dearmon may be great at Xs and Os, but we'd be better off running the clock down to 1 on every play. At least that way we wouldnt give up 47 pts a game.

At this stage more young players should be playing to demonstrate to young players that if they are quality they can come here and play.

I like Les, but I dont think he realized how bad we really were. Anyway I am for giving him 4 seasons, to have a full roster, 90% of which would be at least 3 stars. Forget gimmicks, players win games, not offenses. Especially linemen, we are atrocious on offense and defensive line. Find some big strong slow lineman, and figure out a blocking scheme, even if it is limited. Last year we had a quarterback that was dangerous and defenses had to respect him, so Pooka got some holes. This year defenses are just sitting on Pooka.
If the freshman needs to run option, then get him into option. If you go with other qb, let him sprint out to pass, do something a little different.

After Mangino left, he was such a great coach that he accomplished absolutely nothing. If he was the stud you all think he was, he would have been clamored for by the top programs...... yet he went to Iowa State, the powerhouse!! He did some good things here, but his record was declining and he had lost the locker room. I don't think you guys realize that we were headed in the wrong direction. Were the hires since him good...... no, but that's on the AD not being able to recognize what we need as a coach. I still think Miles will be a good hire to bring us out of the slums. You couldn't have expected much this season with he roster he was left being JUCO heavy and only one year of his recruits, then throw in the pandemic. I don't think some of you are being rational or able to understand the situation. You just see wins and losses and the score. I see a young line on both sides of the ball, a QB room that lacks that leader and a secondary that is all freshmen. I'd like to give Miles 4 years to get his culture, his recruits and his philosophy in here and see where it lands us. This is year 2........ you don't turn a program that's as low as ours around overnight folks.

For the Mangino haters out there, you still happy with the decision fire Mangino ?

Mangino was such a great hire that absolutely nobody wanted him after he left....... He didn't go orchestrate a high powered offense somewhere or coach a team that needed to take that next step. He didn't even coach for several years and then was the TE coach at Youngstown State. Then, he was so coveted that he was offensive coordinator to Iowa State for exactly a year and a half and then disappeared into oblivion. Yeah, worst decision ever LMAO!!

Best lesson I’ve ever learned. Don’t try to rationalize with the irrational. And you are irrational.

IDK Doug, as a Mangino supporter one has to wonder why no one picked him up. Bobby Knight had some discipline issues but he found work after Indiana.

Who wants to play for a team that ends up in last place every season, and doesn't win more than two games in a season. It's unfortunate that KU has to spend money on the football program.

The allure of playing for one of the best BB in the world wasn’t enough to offset what football has become.

In some ways we’re in the same situation we were in 4 years ago. We are getting some promising recruits before the season, but need to show more hope for turning things around as the games are played or we end up losing recruits. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out and then how the class is completed. In the past, it was filled with JCs, though fortunately they commonly came with 3-4 years remaining instead of 2.

We needed to show improvement this year. We have shown regression. I didn’t expect a major uptick, but I did expect improvement.

I agree that all this blabber about offensive gurus is meaningless. If this class folds, Miles is finished. Whether now or later, he can’t afford a single “off” recruiting cycle.

Not sure we could attract Monken at this point but I believe that either him, or someone like him, is our only solution. We need a full solution, not a Hail Mary.

Glen, that is the best response to the Mangino question I’ve read. I’m surprised nobody ever made that point here, at least that I’ve seen.
