Kansas basketball falls out of AP top 5 for first time this season

Kansas head coach Bill Self gets the attention of his players late during the second half, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 at Allen Fieldhouse.

For the first time this season, the Kansas men’s basketball program has fallen out of the top 5 in the Associated Press poll.

The Jayhawks, who fell to Baylor at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, dropped from No. 3 to No. 6. Meanwhile, the Bears jumped from No. 4 to No. 2.

Joining Baylor in this week’s top 5 are No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Auburn and No. 5 Butler. Duke had been in the No. 2 position, but was jumped by Baylor after the Bears picked up back-to-back road wins over Texas Tech and Kansas last week.

Baylor, which trailed Gonzaga by just 7 points in the voting, actually received more first-place votes than Gonzaga in this week’s poll, edging out the Zags 31-30. Duke received the four other first-place votes.

With West Virginia at No. 12 and Texas Tech at No. 23, the Big 12 Conference now has three teams in the top 12 and four in the Top 25.

“I say this all the time, but the Big 12 has been the No. 1-ranked conference in the country the last six years and its never because of one, two or three teams," Baylor coach Scott Drew said after the win over Kansas. "It’s (strong) top to bottom each and every night. It’s a war, and it’s a battle. If you’re not ready to play, you get embarrassed. Anytime our league is showcased nationally, people across the country realize how good the Big 12 is.”

The Jayhawks (12-3 overall, 2-1 Big 12) are now 3-3 this season against teams currently ranked in the Top 25.

KU travels to Oklahoma on Tuesday to take on the Sooners at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

RISING

West Virginia climbed five spots to No. 12 by following a tough road loss to Kansas with wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Colorado also jumped five spots to No. 20 after the Buffaloes throttled Utah 91-52 in its only game of the week.

FALLING

Ohio State wasn’t the only Big Ten team to take a tumble. Michigan State dropped seven spots to No. 15 after the Spartans were pounded 71-42 at Purdue, and Penn State fell from No. 20 all the way out of the poll after the Nittany Lions lost consecutive games to unranked teams in Wisconsin and Rutgers.

IN/OUT

Seton Hall returned to the poll at No. 18 thanks to back-to-back wins over Xavier and Marquette that ran the Pirates’ record to 4-0 in the Big East. A pair of newcomers in Illinois and Creighton rounded out the Top 25, and Virginia and Arizona joined the Nittany Lions in falling out. The Cavaliers lost to Boston College and the Wildcats fell to Oregon State last week.

Winning at WVU will be tough as it was close at KU. Winning at TTU will be tough. This will take a great coaching job and the players will need to be on board to have a chance to tie or win the big 12.
