KU women's basketball falls to Oklahoma State in Big 12 opener

The Kansas women’s basketball team is no longer undefeated.

After an unblemished run through the nonconference slate, KU suffered a 67-49 loss to Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener Saturday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Jayhawks fall to 11-1, including 0-1 in league play, with their first loss of the 2019-20 campaign.

Kansas jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first quarter, but Oklahoma State (9-3, 1-0 Big 12) responded with a 20-point effort in the second period to take the advantage at the intermission. OSU then outscored KU, 16-7, in the third quarter to help pull away.

In nonconference play, KU had six players averaging in double figures. Freshman guard Zakiyah Franklin was the lone player to finish in double figures against Oklahoma State, netting 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor. Senior forward Mariane De Carvalho notched 9 points for the Jayhawks.

Oklahoma State was led by a duo of Natasha Mack and Vivian Gray in the win. Gray scored 27 points on 9-of-20 shooting, while Mack poured in 25 points on an 11-for-14 effort from the floor. OSU finished with 44 points in the paint, compared to KU’s mark of 30 points.

Kansas will host No. 19 West Virginia at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Brutal. Leading by 6 or 7 at the end of the first quarter, and trailing by 2 at the half, it looked like it would be a nail-biter. Unfortunately, it became a train wreck.And, the next two games get progressively tougher. Gonna have to move down the learning curve pretty fast.
