Update: KU football OC Chip Lindsey reportedly leaving to become Troy head coach

Hired Dec. 3 to become the first offensive coordinator under new Kansas football coach Les Miles, Chip Lindsey is reportedly already on his way out of town.

After a couple of previous reports linked Lindsey to the head coaching job at Troy, both Football Scoop and Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports reported Wednesday evening that Lindsey, KU’s OC and quarterbacks coach, will be named Troy’s next coach.

A KU spokesperson said Miles had no comment on the reports at this time.

In the day leading up to the news of Lindsey’s reported departure, Adam Rittenberg of ESPN and Justin McNelley of WDFX/WSFA in Alabama, reported Lindsey, once the quarterbacks coach at Troy, had spoken with the university during its search for a new head coach.

Former Troy head coach Neal Brown left the program this past week to take over at West Virginia, once former Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen moved on to coach at Houston.

Lindsey only spent the 2010 season at Troy, serving as the QBs coach on Larry Blakeney’s staff, but the Sun Belt Conference football program is located in Lindsey’s home state, and Lindsey spent the majority of his early coaching career as a high school coach in Alabama.

Upon joining Miles’ staff just more than five weeks ago, Lindsey signed a four-year term sheet with KU, with Kansas Athletics holding an option for the final year of the deal. However, the terms state Lindsey can leave to become an FBS head coach without being bought out.

Miles hired Lindsey away from Auburn, where he was the offensive coordinator and QBs coach the previous two seasons.

Look at the 4 candidates....Chip is by FAR the most attractive. Depends on what he gets paid by Troy. Neal was making $600K after 4 yrs. He's making more than that here.

Does anyone know if there's a clause in coaching contracts that assesses a penalty to the COACH if he doesn't honor the length of the contract? Or is there a penalty paid by the school that hires him away?

Different contracts have different clauses that affect this. The majority define an early termination by the school. In the majority of the contracts that were recently created, there is a school option for an additional year of service, there is also a buyout clause. For Chip Lindsey's contract there was a specific clause for him to be able to leave for a head coaching position without a buyout. This serves usually a dual success, this means the guy has performed well, and second we don't want to penalize him for his success. The only issue in this case, is a school came prior to him actually coaching. KU benefited for even the limited time if he ends up leaving. I'm sure we will get another offensive coordinator and we will move forward.

I think it was Urban Meyer who in his head coaching contract with Utah or Florida had a no buyout clause if he went to coach at Notre Dame. I think it was his dream and he didn't want anything to stand in its way if it came about.

Premature to call. He will learn more staying. Big five conference, national championship coach, rebuilding job are all powerful incentives to stay put. Better head coaching opportunities in the future aplenty... Including KU.
Learn baby, learn.

Wonder if he poaches the OL coach - others he helped bring in? And who do we get as OC now?

Oh, whatever will Coach Miles do? He surely has never faced anything so threatening to his personal future as well as the future of this program. Oh, my! Oh, my!

Nice sarcasm Jim, though apparently lost on some (pot or kettle). The HC escape clause isn't normal for a contract, so it would seem that Les and Chip were both fully aware of potential dominoes. Guessing that Les has had plenty of conversations already with other candidates and all his connections. At least it is early in the process and really haven't started much of any work with the current team.
