Jayhawks down Tigers in overtime

Kansas guard Kylee Kopatich (33) celebrates with a teammate after sinking one of her five first-half 3-point baskets in the Jayhawks' 66-48 win over Campbell on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, at Allen Fieldhouse.

It took five extra minutes of action, but the University of Kansas women's basketball team came away with a 90-83 victory over Fort Hays State Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks closed out the final 3:53 of the overtime period on a 9-1 run to finish off an exhibition win over the Tigers.

"I don't know if we could have asked for anything more out of an exhibition game," head coach Brandon Schneider said in a team release. "Give Fort Hays State a lot of credit, they were exactly what we expected out of such an experienced group. A lot of veterans over there, who I thought played extremely hard. They were so competitive in all the hustle and toughness areas of the game and I think that made us a lot better today."

Christalah Lyons, Brianna Osorio, Austin Richardson and Kylee Kopatich combined for KU's final 11 points in the win. The four finished the game with 53 points, 23 rebounds and eight assists for the Jayhawks.

Kansas plays host to Washburn at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Needs overtime to win over Fort Hayes St in an exhibition game. Ouch.

Exactly! Yet another year of mediocrity ahead. Maybe Schneider and Beaty can share a train out of town. C'mon Long save us.

Ok Bob. Just imagine if the KU men’s basketball team had to take overtime to beat FHSU and I made the comment that they are a top team rated WBB team. I’m sure everyone would be ok and understand why it took overtime to win. No way. Unacceptable. You are a Div 1 program. Win the game in regulation. You should win this game by no more than 12 points.

Dee, terrible comparison. I get it that it was Fort Hays....but the KU women aren’t the UCONN women’s basketball team. We are aiming for an at large bid to the tournament. This should be the year where we see good improvement over year one. I think Brandon will get it done. These people like “ “ expect a national championship in year one or fire everybody. Brandon can recruit...we have a 5 star recruit and some good judos and transfers. Might take a while to gel, but we should be pretty competitive.

" expect a national championship in year one..." Whaaaaatt? NO ONE has expected that from KUWBB. Especially from this Zengy hire. How about expect more than 2 or 3 Big 12 wins per year??!! This guy has won like 6% of Big 12 games in 3 yrs. You find that acceptable? Hell maybe he can recruit....but he sure as heck doesn't seem to be able to get those recruits to win games. So that's worthless.

2-16 is obviously an improvement over a really disappointing 0-18 start and fortunately not everyone quits on the programs after just 2 years. Starting year 3 needing OT to win an exhibition is not encouraging but then neither is 22 TOs. It is good to have an opportunity to learn real game lessons and hopefully improve for when it counts. Guessing the ladies won't be quitting just because the first game wasn't as good as desired.
