One of the most productive high school quarterbacks in the state of Missouri this past year, Park Hill senior Billy Maples plans to walk on with the Kansas football program.
Maples, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound QB from Kansas City, Mo., announced his decision Monday on Twitter.
During his senior season, Maples threw for 3,130 yards and 41 touchdowns, with nine interceptions, while leading Park Hill to the Missouri Class 6 state semifinals and a 10-3 season.
While Maples garnered some interest from a few other smaller college football programs, KU was the only FBS team that even discussed a walk-on opportunity with him, he told the Journal-World.
Maples was a second-team all-state quarterback in Missouri’s Class 6, according to media voters, while the Show Me State’s high school coaches voted him first-team all-state.

Mike you ought to realize poor old Brett has it rough. - - Poor guy gave up ALL his season tickets - -never wanting any thing to do with KU football anymore . The day he said that I marked on my Calendar and noted " YES THERE IS A GOD " now if we can just get rid of some of these other idiots - -we will be fine, hope they follow good ol Attaboy Brett right on out the tunnel lmao, maybe he can have all his followers walk with him right on out and - - -keep walking- -now don't hesitate, don't look back because if you do then you'll ruin the KU party that's celebrating all the little clowns that have all that MAJOR D-1 Coaching experience, I just don't understand why all these arm chair Coaches haven't made their trip t the Ad and file their application to take over the Coaching position - -things that make you go hmmmm

This poor kid just stepped into here. Any chance to develop into an actual D-1 player just vanished with this decision.

Recruiting is challenging enough, without a fan base that is negative towards a young man willing to initially pay his way to get a shot at earning a scholarship and helping turn the football program around; whether under Beaty or his predecessor.

Because every other D1 team was clearly beating down his door with scholarships or walk on offers just like the article said.

I hope someday the people on here who say, not just negative things about others in an attempt to help them correct problems, but rather say mean, spiteful things intended to hurt and not help, have someone speak at their funerals to remind people of the quality they brought to the community while they lived.
There is no reason to demean Billy Maples. We could start the conversation by asking Kevin, Gary, Mike and Gerry how many yards and TD's they threw for and the name of the school so it can be verified.
Then, when we have verified that, we will allow them to take on Reuben Lewis in a series of Oklahoma drills to demonstrate their skills at handling the big men they love to denigrate.
Please let us know gentlemen when these things can be arranged.

Based on this kid's resume in HS, why weren't there any FBS teams offering him, Not even a Group of 5 offer? His size and production seem like they would warrant some scholarship interest from at least some MAC programs.

If it was grades, he wouldn't walk on at Kansas, he would head to a JuCo to get his grades up and then to whatever program.

KU comp: remindful of David Jaynes from Bonner Springs who chose KU over Alabama, if memory serves me correctly. About the same size. Great with the long ball. Very accurate in tight windows.

This is a good get.
High school kid, 5 year player, local talent, motivated, a chance to earn a scholarship.
This is a recruit for his 4th and 5th year.
I'd take 5-6 of these types of kid every year.

Let's all stay positive towards KU football and recruits this season. If Beaty is unsuccessful in the wins and loses department this season, the next KU coach will have to use this year's players to attempt to dig KU out of football purgatory. You have to admire walk-on football players and their parents who are willing to pay their own way for a chance at a scholarship two or three years down the road. The 2018 season will either be a break-out season or one of more of the same. Let's go Hawks. Look at Bill Self, he's a Hall of Fame coach and will probably be the winningest coach in KU history and everyone wants his head after a couple of losses that don't usually happen.

Seriously, what do all you Negative Nellies hope to accomplish?
You are not educating we who are still hopeful. And you are not influencing the decision-makers in the administration.
You’re obviously free to post but all you’re doing is ruining what enthusiasm remains for the program. And if anything you’re just dissuading recruits from coming, which is hurting the University. Is that your goal?

Mike Johns - If you go back to look at previous classes I think you will find 5-6 of "these" players in each class. This is especially the case if you include blueshirts which imo is appropriate. They got a scholarship the first year but aren't a traditional recruit. That is part of the reason Beaty's recruiting is better than the rankings indicate, though some here would tell you otherwise (every chance they get).

I welcome him to the University of Kansas. If you remember...just a few short years (well it seems like forever), KU took a kid from Texas that nobody really wanted and he took KU to the Orange Bowl. Give the kid a chance "fans"!

We cannot celebrate getting recruits no one else wants and then be surprised when the on field results are also those that no one else wants.
I am sure he is a great kid, and I wish him nothing but success... but KU needs Big 12 talent to win Big 12 games.
