Jayhawks' 2018 recruiting class grows to six late Saturday night

Kansas University football recruiting

If David Beaty had gone to bed early Saturday night, after he and his Kansas football assistant coaches secured four verbal commitments for their 2018 recruiting class, the KU head coach could’ve slept well following what already had to be considered a wildly successful day for the downtrodden program.

Believe it or not, the Jayhawks’ banner recruiting day was just getting started.

Less than an hour before the clock struck midnight, Beaty was back at it on Twitter, with two additional “#NeatDeal” posts, indicating prospects had chosen KU. And, as was the case three times earlier Saturday, those promises came from highly-touted Louisiana preps.

Six-foot-two receiver Ja’Marr Chase became not just the second receiver to commit on KU’s junior day, when a long list of Class of 2018 recruits were in Lawrence to check out Memorial Stadium and Anderson Family Football Complex, but the second four-star receiver to do so. A 185-pound wideout at Rummel High, in Metairie, Louisiana, Chase also has offers from Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss, TCU and several other programs, according to Rivals.

Chase simply tweeted out “I am a Jayhawk,” Saturday night, a few hours after four-star receiver Devonta Jason, from New Orleans, made his announcement.

Three-star safety Aaron Brule capped a remarkable day for KU recruiting within an hour of his high school teammate Chase’s declaration by following suit, making him the fifth prep from Kansas running back coach Tony Hull’s home state of Louisiana to commit to Kansas that day.

A 6-foot, 165-pound safety for Rummel, Brule also has offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Tennessee and others.

Chase and Brule joined Jason, four-star cornerback Corione Harris and three-star running back Anthony Williams as new KU football commitments from Louisiana. Kansas seems to have a real connection with athletes from The Pelican State since Hull joined the staff just more than a year ago. A former high school head coach at New Orleans’ Warren Easton, from 2007 to 2015, Hull helped land standout safety Mike Lee from his hometown. The KU assistant said a few months back he wasn’t surprised by the success he had experienced in recruiting Louisiana.

“I would say I’ve been humbled by the support I’ve received from my family back at home. When I say my family, I mean high school coaches in Louisiana and the parents and the support staff and the administration at the high schools,” Hull said long before anyone realized just how much he was accomplishing. “Everyone’s been extremely supportive of the move I made and trying to help build that bridge back to Louisiana.”

Clayton Tune, a 6-foot-2 quarterback from Texas, also committed to Kansas Saturday, giving the Jayhawks six members to kick off next year’s class, on the weekend following 2017’s National Signing Day.

KU’s momentous weekend had the program sitting pretty in Rivals’ preliminary Class of 2018 recruiting class rankings. While all verbal commitments are non-binding and each team’s class as a whole won’t become official for close to a year, on National Signing Day, Kansas currently has the seventh-best class in the nation — trailing just top-rated Penn State, Florida State, USC, Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami (Fla.).

Over the past few years, according to Rivals, KU’s recruiting classes ranked 56th in 2017, 85th in 2016, 68th in 2015, 55th in 2014 and 45th in 2013.

Holy smokes! Congratulations coaches and new players. Things are definitely moving in the right direction with this team.

For so long when we'd get a commitment it was reported that the recruit also received offers from several DII schools. This new crop received offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Old Miss, etc.

And from the earlier article yesterday I seem to recall one of the recruits had an offer from Alabama and another from Auburn.

Also, the players we lost last year were unheralded before we offered, but were later stolen by better established & performing teams. That's not the case here. Virtually every one of these guys is well known and receiving offers from multiple P5 teams.

As much as it is credit to Hull and Beaty, et al for getting them on campus and being the positive group, it seems that the real selling comes from 2 of the "boot boyz" that are already here. Mike Lee is the walking, talking embodiment of the opportunity to come in and play/excel right away, and Charlot is able to talk about go to a big established program and sit on the sidelines.

I am thoroughly amused at everybody. All the whining and complaints about Beaty and Co. not winning games this year. ROFLMAO. But seriously, as I have said, even with all these new recruits, if we win 3 games this next year it's a success. KU gets 8 more schollies this next year and we will still be short some scholarships. Whiners need to shut your traps for another two years and leave Beaty and this staff alone and just support them. It will take Beaty his first full recruiting class to pass it all down to freshman newcomers for 4 years before we have any kind of depth. It will two more seasons before KU has any good chance of the system being solidified. IMO, with what was left to him, Beaty is doing a fantastic job so far! Anything better than a toilet bowl between now and 2020 should be a major surprise.

I like your support of Beaty, but KU is much further along in their development than the picture you are painting.Once they settled on Stanley, and with the play of their defense, KU was making major progress. Now, add in the OC and the new players and KU will be a very different team this fall.

Because of Blueshirts, if we have another subclass like last year we should be close to a full program even this year. It is true that we will still be short of most programs regarding player development, but we are certainly closer to resurrecting the program than you claim. That is especially true if this next class even remotely resembles this group. These guys are instant impact players similar to Mike Lee.

Hope we are able to keep Coach Hull and the recruits. A little concerned about the O line though. Realize we have a lot of young guys, but you need big hogs on both sides of the ball to win. Looking like we have a lot of quality skill guys.

This is truly unchartered territory. Two kids out the national top 60? Six in a day? My goodness.

Since everything is perfect in the world of KU football, maybe some of these kids can wrap up and graduate by December? Imagine the impact of having them off the market, on campus and competing in spring ball next year?

I will say this about Beaty, Hull and staff - impressed just doesn't cover it. This is probably the single biggest non-signing day in KU football recruiting history.

I was thinking the same thing Brett. I can't ever remember a day such as this.- - Now it's just a matter of how strong of a bond they really have formed with Coach Hull. - -How strong they will hold true to their verbal. - -Like someone else said I will be on pins and needles till they actually sign their name on the dotted line, as we all know until that time - - we going against the Big boys here and they are really going to pressure these kids to de-commit, and change their decision. - -What a great day for us though., - just lie we have said, think for sure just give Coach a little time and we make progress,. - -With the new OC he has now, with Clint in charge of the Defense, and of Course coach Hull plus the others, things are for sure headed in the right direction.

I remember an early post of mine not long after Coach was hired and was already showing signs of being a special recruiter. I simply stated that Beaty (and certainly his coaches), could go down as some of the best recruiters this university has ever seen. This latest set of circumstances certainly lends itself to supporting that theory. I don't know if we'll be able to keep them all on the line or not, but my faith in this coach and staff has only gotten stronger. Outstanding day fellas!! Reminds me of the day we signed Frank Seurer and Kerwin Bell. Dating myself a bit........Rock Chalk!!!

I believe Coach Hull is in line for a significant bump in pay. Not that none of the other coaches don't deserve a bump in pay, but Coach Hull has been a drastic change in the recruiting category for Jayhawks Football program. I'll bet that Bret Bielema wished that he had vision to hire Coach Hull.

We had better get all of our assistant coaches, long term contracts, with more than sufficient pay, if we haven't already done so-and with a clause that times them to us, for the duration of their contracts! I don't want to see what happened, losing so many assistant coaches, the first couple years, to ever happen again!!!

Someone wrote that Dr Z got raises for all the assistants just after Coach Beaty. I'm sure that they are all talking about successful programs being multi-faceted, whether that be O/D/ST, each of the position groups, the coaches, the support staff, the facilities, the fans.

We usually only get articles about 1 aspect at a time, b/c that's the nature of newspapers and readers. If we pay attention to and remember the comments from Beaty and Zenger, they most definitely see the big picture and are working on all facets of the program(s).

Okay okay okay to say that I'm surprised shocked excited estatic to say the least but before I get to over the moon about this it's early let's see how many of these kids we can hang onto. A lot of these big successful power programs they're going to keep pushing these kids and coming after them let's hope a lot of these kids have the Integrity of a Dominic Williams to stay the course and honor their commitments Anything Can Happen. Right now it's exciting but when these kids sign their letters of intent next year however many of them are still left is when they are Jayhawks.

A successful season this year with a few surprise wins such as the Win Over Texas last year or finally being able to knock off at TCU would go a long way to securing more commitments or solidifying the commitments already have from these kids.

New offensive coordinator number 1 Juco running back in-state recruits right now things are exciting but that doesn't necessarily mean wins they have to start winning. They have to start winning!!!

Let's face it who knew who really knew that one coach with ties to Louisiana could make this much of a difference in one year I know these kids are not signed yet but Mike Lee is and a couple of more kids from Louisiana that signed in the 2017 class this guy by far is the MVP of this team.

In Reading most of the interviews from these kids they all said that they felt comfortable with the coaching staff and they felt comfortable with Coach Hull I think it's not about where these kids are playing I think they need to feel comfortable they want to feel like when they leave home they still have part of home with them and Coach Hull is doing just that.

Let's just hope they all sign next year it's still early it's fun to get excited but nothing for sure yet.

Remember this is a copycat Society honestly do you not believe that there is a coach from Texas Oklahoma Oklahoma State Iowa State on the phone right now with High School coaches in the Louisiana area looking to see if they could join their staff In some capacity I guarantee you a phone call from these programs have already been made.

Do not dismiss this, it could be just a fluke or a could be a trend wait a year or two and Kansas will have all these players from the Louisiana area in their program and these other programs will be just standing there with their hands in their pocket I guarantee you these phone calls have already been made. Kansas is getting these kids attention some of them may not sign but they're getting their attention that is a really big deal for a team that has two wins and last two years.

The key here is that it is a self reinforcing trend. These guys will be comfortable having friends from their home state up at KU whereas they otherwise would be scattered across the SEC and elsewhere. So comfortable with their friends and comfortable with the coaching staff hopefully means retaining all these commitments.

Yes these kids have some stars after their names, but if you think that the top programs are going to flip out because they missed a few, you’re kidding yourself. Nobody is gonna come start a fight to land these guys. They’ve made their offers and that’s that.

I’m still excited about the direction of the program. Still excited about Beatty and staff. I will reserve my confidence about these guys until they, first, clear all of the personal stuff that has impaired so many other unexpected 4-5 star Kansas recruits. Secondly they will have to prove that they deserve those stars and aren’t just coasting on someone’s overrating. I don’t have the time to list all of Kansas’ recent over-ratings.

Let’s just wait and see. I’m happy to see these guys commit, but let’s just see if they are really carrying the goods to Lawrence.

You're delusional if you think LSU in particular is going to just shrug off losing the top players from their state. No, they're not coming to "start a fight" with us, but there is no way they're just leaving their offers lying on the table. They most definitely will be talking to the Boyz back in the boot. Go watch their tape. Even against the top competition they show crazy skills. Jason in particular. He'll be top 10 in the conference if not higher as a freshman. Harris will be a lock down corner and shut down half the field by the time he's a sophomore, and make the all-freshman team as well.
