4-star CB Corione Harris sticks to his word, signs with Kansas football

Kansas University football recruiting

On the first Saturday of February, the sky appeared to be limit for the downtrodden Kansas football program’s 2018 recruiting class.

Out of nowhere, receiver Devonta Jason and cornerback Corione Harris — Louisiana prospects considered four-star talents and among the top 100 players in the nation — caught the recruiting world off guard by announcing during a junior day visit to Lawrence they were committing to KU.

A little more than 10 months later, when those non-binding pledges could become official, the Jayhawks had to settle for one Landry-Walker High stud.

Harris, with Jason at his side for a ceremony Wednesday morning in New Orleans, remained loyal to his word, signing with Kansas.

Jason, who de-committed 10 days earlier, decided to sign with Mississippi State.

Many who follow college football recruiting assumed KU wouldn’t actually sign either Jason or Harris, so the 6-foot-1 corner’s December decision, for some, proved just as shocking as his initial commitment — especially considering Harris was deciding between Kansas and MSU, the program Jason ultimately joined.

Rivals recruiting analyst Woody Wommack described Harris, the No. 97 prospect in the entire Class of 2018, as a versatile athlete, because as a prep he played quarterback, receiver and defensive back, and projects him as a “shutdown” corner at the college level.

“His size and physicality are his best attributes and he has a competitive spirit that is contagious among his teammates,” Wommack wrote. “Landing Harris marks a major recruiting victory and puts other programs on notice that the Jayhawks are going to be a presence in New Orleans going forward. The fact that Kansas stayed on Harris and was able to hold on to him despite pushes from other programs and the team's struggles on the field this season shows just how strong the bond between Harris and the Jayhawks coaches really was.”

New Orleans native and KU running backs coach Tony Hull recruited Harris and Jason, as well as their former prep teammate at Landry-Walker, safety Mike Lee. A junior-to-be, Lee was in attendance Wednesday morning at his old high school to see Harris pick the Jayhawks.

According to Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant, Harris is the highest-rated corner to sign with Kansas since they began tracking the rankings, back in 1999.

Bryson is wrong (as per usual). I'm sure there will be a few wackos that watch from time to time regardless of what they say. People love to complain.

One kid doesn't make a team. Having said that this is a very good step towards building a good defense. Happy for the team and for Harris.

Alright Adam, fellow Maize Alum. If I am wrong like you state I am. Let's put some money where your mouth is. I assure you, attendance numbers will be up next year from now. Put the $ amount and ill agree to it. (attendance is the best way to measure what i said will happen)

Thanks for your time.

Yeah and Beaty had nothing to do with hiring Hull out of the high school ranks to be running backs coach either. (sarcasm)

Beaty may not be a great coach but you still need to give him credit when he deserves it. Not enough to keep his job but if he doesn't hire Hull we don't get Harris.

Tony Hull, Are you interested in becoming our new head coach? You seem to know how to recruit a territory, bring some big recruits into KU, and it seems you have a strong connection in the southern states to get us some more future talent. Beaty, doesn’t know how to recruit a territory he was hired to Recruit Texas, where are the Texas recruits at? Where are his strong Texas connections? Where are those Kansas kids you said you would bring to Kansas? Man how many power 5 Kansas players have we missed out on in the last 2 years? How many have been slipped through the cracks that could be solid players here? All I ever asked for from Beaty was Win 2-3 games this year and keep us in games by 1-2 touchdowns. Is that a hard task to achieve? Beaty do is a favor and resign.

That's not the point dude. Our whole issue is that David Beaty (your savior) said HIMSELF that recruiting JUCO kids was not the way to build a program. Yet that is what the continues to do even in year four. He has failed to develop the HS kids that he did manage to coax into coming to KU well enough to play in the B12 (or in D1 for that matter).

As I said previously, I have zero issue signing JUCO kids to shore up places where there is little depth. But that's not what is going on here. We currently have 8? JUCO kids and half that of HS kids. That's not shoring up spaces, that's taking what you can get.

Very happy about Harris. I have no problem praising Beaty and team when they deserve it and this is one of those times. Unfortunately there haven't been enough of those times in the past few years.

Where's the evidence he hasn't developed kids? Do you see who our stars are? Kids with no offers from other schools, kids who came to college completely undersized, kids who are completely undersized. Not a single player who was "good" for us this year was like that out of HS.

David Beaty's problem lies on Saturdays when he tries to coach and quite frankly can't do it.

I agree with your part about how he said you develop a class. He has leaned against that but he has brought in an abundance of high schoolers in the past that serve as a foundation for this JUCO heavy class. This is literally just giving us more upper classmen for the next two years which i think is a good thing.

(Also David Beaty is not my savior. I fully expect and think the man should be fired next season. However, he did do a damn decent job rebuilding our program and changing the culture in the locker room and I am thankful for that)

Coaches can coach, but players play games and win or lose. I can guarantee you that our top players are just as tired of losing as the fans. With 20+ senior, junior and sophomore classes, we should turn the corner next year and start winning. How many wins remains to be seen. Too many injuries and no experienced depth killed us this season.

Is that 1 or 2 games you expect to win next year? Tell us a number. Beaty said that in year 3 he should be bowling.

Are you suggesting a bowl game? Or is winning games returning to two games?

Personally I'm on record of Nicholls state as a coin flip leaning towards Nicholls and losing the rest.

Most P65 teams are built on 80% High School 3 star players, with a mix of 2* and 4* and offsetting with a JUCO to patch holes or unexpected issues.

It is exciting to see the occasional 4* recruit as Weis and as Gill did prior to Beaty. However, we win based on the development of the 80%, and that is what we have been missing. Lee who was a 4* as well as seen his role diminished even to the point that he was benched. I'll be more excited about this recruit when I see the coaching staff develop the player.

Do we have the ability to recruit 25 players this year? If so how many have signed so far?

Last 4 complete recruiting classes according to Rivals.

KU - 2014 - 55th, 2015 - 66th, 2016 - 95th, 2017 - 57th

K-State - 2014 - 47th, 2015 - 45th, 2016 - 80th, 2017 - 63rd

ISU - 2014 - 56th, 2015 - 58th, 2016 - 53rd, 2017 - 44th

The 2018 recruiting class is not complete yet so we will be able to add to this later. But if you look at the numbers between these teams they are fairly close.
