Juco D-lineman backs off KU commitment, intends to sign with Ohio

Kansas University football recruiting

The Kansas football team’s Class of 2018 commitment list is one name shorter after a junior college defensive lineman this past weekend declared his intentions to play elsewhere.

Zach Burks, a sophomore defensive tackle at Coffeyville Community College, announced through his Twitter profile after making an official visit to Ohio University that he had committed to the Bobcats.

Burks, a former Olathe North D-lineman who originally committed to KU back in May, had divulged via tweet this past week he would reopen his recruiting process.

Considered a three-star juco defensive tackle by Rivals, Burks made 37 total tackles for Coffeyville this season. He shared via Twitter some of his reasoning for the decision to switch his commitment to Ohio.

“Being at Coffeyville gave me a second chance and some of you may know that things with KU didn’t work out,” Burks posted, in note form. “I’m happy to say that I’m going to be a Bobcat come January. I can’t thank them enough for giving me this opportunity.”

by Zach Burks⚠️

With Burks Ohio-bound, KU’s 2018 recruiting class stands at 13 players as of Monday, with four of the prospects potentially signing from the junior college ranks: safety Jeremiah McCullough and defensive back Davon Ferguson, from Hartnell College (Calif.); cornerback Elmore Hempstead, from Fort Scott C.C.; and defensive end Najee Stevens-McKenzie, from ASA College (N.Y.).

Actually, in Beaty's case, you win 3 and lose 30+. In Zenger's case, you lose 50+.

I am happy that the kid found a program where they take football seriously and have an actual coach.

So, you propose that Beaty made an offer to a kid and then pulled that offer because he found someone better, and that's a good sign of leadership?

I suspect that the offer was pulled because of other reasons, which also doesn't speak well of Beaty's incompetent recruiting. This is like watching a train wreck in slo motion.

I don't hate Beaty. The man just should not be a Division 1 head football coach. They could hire me, and I would gladly take a million dollars a year and no doubt could win three games in three seasons. So if I would take the same gig, why would I or anyone else hate him?

Glad to see the reduction in JUCO numbers.

Hopefully this is in response to some of the concern that he was starting to take shortcuts and recruit and use JUCOs.

At first I would say that this is a good sign that we are not recruiting talent that is suited for a non-Power 5 conference, but again Ohio has beaten us the past two years (badly).

So do we have 12 more scholarships left? So far 4 of 13 are JUCOs.

What is the right amount of JUCO/High School, assuming we have 12 more scholarships?

1 week, 5 days ago

Report

Since Beaty will be fired next year, he should be allowed to offer zero JUCO scholarships. But Zenger doesn't hold his coaches accountable, that's how Weis was allowed to destroy the team and that's how Beaty's been allowed to keep it destroyed.

We should not be offering a single JUCO scholarship at any position. If the B.S. coming out of the AD's office is true, then we should be building for the long-haul. But we aren't.

This has nothing to do with lowering JUCO numbers, it's just an acknowledgment of a mistake. I was told Beaty was intending to offer two other players at Coffeyville.

The truth is that recruiting Kansas JUCO talent could be a gold mine for KU if done correctly. Especially now that there are no limits on out of state recruits. Weiss' problem is he relied too heavily on JUCOs vs High School recruits and recruited kids based on stars alone.

There's a lot of talent in the Sunflower Conference. Remember Micheal Gallop was just down the road in El Dorado....

So actions meet consequences.

Beaty pulls the scholarship of a kid that never should've been recruited and now burns bridges at one of the better JUCOS in the state.

The good news is that Beaty and his staffs incompetence might prevent them from overloading on JUCO talent by getting blackballed. The bad news is it will cost them legit JUCO talent and will make it harder for the next coach to make JUCO relationships in the state.

Some negative people would say that all the classes have been bad = Beatty is a bad recruiter and ignore the fact that we've gone from zero all conference to 5. It seems to me that the staff has done a good job of recruiting and development. The pieces obviously haven't come together for Ws but they have absolutely done the first task - rebuild the roster.

For those committed to being negative though that's what they'll find even if they have to create it themselves.

It's too bad they didn't pull Hasaan No Defenses' scholarship offer last year this guy is terrible he's not a Division 1 Talent. But then again most of this roster is not so I might be splitting hairs here. For those of you a who are going to spew hate, losses to Ohio, Central Michigan getting beat by the lower division power 5 team such as Rutgers and getting completely destroyed by every team in the Big 12 by double-digits including the winless Baylor team who started a freshman quarterback and who by the way lost to Liberty. AND no this is not because Beaty inherited a team with not enough scholarship players the ones he's bringing in are not talented enough to compete maybe it's because those are the only players he can get to come to the program or he's just not developing the ones that are there, this team is has a lack of talent please stop saying it's because of scholarship players or lack thereof.

I liked your comment because of what you said about Hasan lol. That dude is some garbo, he's honestly just too tall for corner for his lack of athleticism.

I would have loved to beat Baylor, but we are not a better football team than them as sad as that sounds. I do believe we should have kept it much closer but our secondary is TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASH and our offense isn't good enough to make up for it. Simple as that.

Baylor lost to Liberty & UTSA because of lack of experience, new system/coach and just young players making young player mistakes. Their competitiveness with the big 12 teams shows that they actually had quite a bit of talent and their inexperience/youthfulness is why they were dropping those games and then randomly getting blown out.

Baylor was honestly much like Texas last year in terms of having talent and just things going awry on and off the field resulting in them losing 6 straight. They still are a half decent football team and don't be surprised if they go bowling next year.

People miss that we are not only rebuilding our roster but rebuilding our team. We have to put someone on the field and when our talent isn't quite as good as Baylor's, you would see the same results from us putting freshman on the field way too early. Injuries, losing to FCS teams etc.. That is why we have to bring in more JUCO players than we want because we aren't good enough to bring in top tier freshman to fix our positional problems (secondary) so we have to try to bring in someone who has a little more experience to play on the field while we develop people behind the scenes.

Please provide stats from the beginning of the season to the end to prove your point that he got better. He couldn't cover the receivers from Ohio or CMichigan.

He plays so far off the ball on 3rd down because he is afraid of getting beat deep, the receiver just runs to the marker and it's a first down. He stinks please stop.

Ty Becker (Is he a new poster?) is the Source that Beaty rescinded the offer (Benton's article certainly did not state that.)

If Burks is good enough to be recruited by Ohio , you would think KU would still be interested in him. Coach Jesse Williams might know something.

What if we lose both Wise and Armstrong (both likely) to the NFL? DLine help is a definite need, which also makes this puzzling.

I don't know why they aren't reporting that they pulled his offer. Maybe they are letting the kid save a little face by making it seem like it was his choice. Maybe the coaching staff is trying to keep this quiet so it can't be used as negative ammunition against them.

I'm sure it has to do something with the fact that it's a bad look for the coaching staff to pull a scholarship this late in the process. Especially if the student-athlete didn't have any negative conduct to warrant it and it's just a missed player evaluation.

Off topic here but can the Anti-Beaty and Beaty Apologist crowd at least agree on one thing: That Dr. Zenger should be fired like yesterday?

At the very least removed from his position as Athletic Director and reshuffled into another position?

Is there anyone out there that approves of his job performance?

It's amazing to me every time he supports Beaty by talking about the train wreck he inherited. He always fails to mention that he is responsible for said trainwreck. It's flabbergasting to think that he feels that you can't hold his current hire's feet to the fire over W and L's because his last hire burned the place to the ground.

Zenger is very good at a lot of the other aspects of his job and I imagine that is why he has kept his position.
