Beer and wine available at Memorial Stadium to KU fans who join new Field Goal Club

Kansas running back Taylor Martin (24) and Kansas wide receiver Tyler Patrick (4) celebrate Patrick's touchdown reception during the third quarter on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at Memorial Stadium.

A limited number of Kansas football fans observing a touchdown from the north end of Memorial Stadium now have the option of doing so accompanied by some celebratory beer or wine.

Beginning this season, the university’s athletic department announced Thursday, members of the Williams Education Fund with KU football season tickets can purchase a membership to the new Field Goal Club, located just past the north end zone.

Alcoholic beverages are not sold in the stadium, but are available to members of the Field Goal Club, just as they have been to those in KU’s Touchdown Club, located on the south end of the stadium.

The new club area — restricted to fans aged 21 or older, will provide beer, wine and water, as well as a limited a la carte menu from Chick-fil-A and Salty Iguana, which includes non-alcoholic bottled drinks.

Williams Education Fund members with season tickets were able to request Field Goal Club memberships beginning Thursday.

Cost for a Field Goal Club membership is $400 per person, with a purchase limit equal to the number of season tickets held, up to six memberships.

The club area includes an open field level viewing area 10 feet from the end zone, as well as a first-come, first-served section of bleacher seating, with seatbacks.

A payment plan is available, and members may put 10 percent down at the time of purchase, with the remaining balance to be charged, in equal amounts, on Sept. 1 and Oct. 2. Membership sales will be based on Williams Education Fund membership level.

Those interested can request a membership by filling out an online form or visiting KUtickets.com’s premium seating page.

How does this impact seating in the north end of the stadium. Seems like this would completely obstruct a good chunk of the family zone seats. Is KU going to pull a Baylor and tarp off those seats that will be blocked frokm the new bleachers or will they be left empty and and uncovered, or will people sit where they can't see the game.

You want an even better attendance? Allow beer sales to the entire stadium. That will keep the students and other fans in the stadium past the first half. And it makes money for the university. The Lied Center has started allowing alcoholic beverages during intermission of their shows so why can't Memorial Stadium start selling? Obviously you would have to manage the fake ID and the people buying drinks for minors situation but if Arrowhead and Kauffman and Children's Mercy stadium staff can do it then so can Memorial staff seeing as how the attendance is much lower and in a smaller space.

It takes time and money to set up beer sales stadium wide. Makes more sense to wait and do it during the renovation/rebuild of the stadium than to do it twice.
