Former Memphis forward Tarik Black to visit KU on Tuesday

Tarik Black, a 6-foot-9 junior from University of Memphis who recently announced plans to transfer, will visit Duke today and Kansas University on Tuesday, according to zagsblog.com. He has visited Georgetown and Oregon and also has spoken with coaches from Ohio State and San Diego State, Zagsblog reports.

Black averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds as a junior last season for the Tigers. He will be immediately eligible next season as a senior after earning his degree at Memphis.

Wonder if he'll be here before or after Wiggins' announcement.

Both OAD. At this point, Black may be better for us.

Wiggins is a huge difference-maker. One of the best SFs that I have seen in years whereas Black...well, he started 5 games (out of 32 last season) and averaged a few points and a few rebounds. Meh.

Wiggins also has a huge EGO and doesn't come across as a real team guy.

Exactly what basis do you have for either of these comments? No press conference and only one media member present when he announces. No TV cameras. I have no way of commenting on whether he is a team guy or not, because I don't have any information on that one way or another. About the only thing anyone can point to in saying he has a huge ego is the fact that he has waited so long to announce where he is going. Unless you have some insight none of the rest of us do, I don't think that is a valid reason to base a conclusion on his motives. Didn't Rush end up waiting until August to decide where he wanted to go? He turned out to be one of the more selfless and team oriented players we have had in a long time.

If you have information that supports your statement, please share. If it turns out you are right, I will gladly change my opinion. However, from everything I have heard so far, he's just another kid (albiet one with unbelievable talent) trying to decide where he wants to spend the next year of his life.

Any player to announce that he is only playing one year of college ball before he commits to anyone has an EGO. If you are that good, show some class, play the year out, see how it turns out and then announce your plans.

Yes, Rush signed very late but he never announced to the world he was playing just one year. He ended up staying 3 years and I am sure he is glad he did stay that 3rd year because KU won the National title that season.

Brandon wasn't even the best in his class, much less one of the best ever. Wiggins waiting shows that he knows he has options, and clear understanding of his ability to play in the NBA immediately.

Actually, not that it matters, but it was widely stated by Rush and those around him that he wanted to be an OAD. Same goes for several other players KU has had that ended up staying multiple years. The most recent I can think of is Releford. Just because these kids think they can be OAD doesn't mean they are all EGO and not a team player. They are told from day one they are the best in the world and they all think they will be the next King James. When they get to college, most of them realize that isn't the case and they stay multiple years. As for Wiggins, I think it is pretty clear he has the talent and the ability to be OAD, considering many draft experts have said he would be the #1 pick in this year's draft if he was eligible. Don't hate on the kid for stating a fact. In all honesty, he's doing the schools and coaches a favor by telling them up front, I'm only here for one year.

over Andrew Wiggins, the player that would go first in next draft if he was eligible? A player that will likely give you 30 minutes, 20 points and 5 rebounds a game?
Like Gary Parish said:
"I'm not saying Black isn't very good or that he can't be very good.
I'm just saying he wasn't very good at Memphis."

Withey had multiple years left in College to develop. This is a one year deal. I think the problem with Black is not a physical thing but a dedication, motivational, and enthusiasm problem. He certainly had a problem while in Memphis (I live in Mps so have been exposed to him since his projection out of high school). This is a case where I do not blame Pastner (Mps Head Coach). Pastner is young but certainly is a motivational coach on steroids. Black was a total disappointment during his time here. However there are times local talent is better off developing out of the area and this might be one of them. If he does come to KU I certainly hope he will contribute to the level of his projected potential coming out of HS.

The problem is that he didn't work on the basketball court--in games or in practice--for three years. People who think he's going to be an inside banger are going to be disappointed when a Conference USA second stringer doesn't miraculously become an impact player in the B12.

Good question!! :) Counting the eggs before they hatch? Why not?? All in the name of good fun...

I don't see why not... he would fit all of Self's criteria for senior night speech - last year at KU, must have spent at least 4 years in college, must earn a college degree (either already done so or about to do so). I don't recollect Self ever mentioning that the senior must earn his degree from KU. If he does get his senior night speech I am certain Self will crack some jokes at his expense!!

Black will make Perry better, no double-team low; he will make Lucus and JoJo tougher to have to guard him in practice. Black improves the team greatly. However, Wiggins is a special talent. He would make the whole team better if he wore a Kansas uniform. But, I agree with many on this board, he will be wearing Yuk blue next year. His biggest battle next year will be with the Harrison Twins, Young, Randle, Johnson, Alex P and more for the ball to score. You can't be the number one NBA Draft choice and be the 2nd or 3rd top scorer on your college team.

Would make me mad!!!!! :(

I don't see his Dad even giving us as an interested school!!!! Weird as Self has been ALL OVER Josh in the past.

Also, weird that Alford would focus on Perkins when local McLaughlin is ranked HIGHER and in their own backyard.

Could it mean we're even MORE in on McLaughlin?

I don't know but he's like 6', 165 compared to Perkins is 6'2, 185.....I think I'd rather have Perkins. Also, KNOWN to be smart, defensive-minded. I know you supposedly can't tell everything from the tapes, but he sounded IDEAL to me and like prioirity No. 1 for us from the '14 Class despite being ranked lower than some others.

Let's see, a "one and done" who will go straight to the NBA and forgo his college education after playing college ball for one season. Or, a "one and done" who is at the end of his college education and will probably go straight to the D League or Europe after seeing sporadic playing time on a college team where chemistry and tradition go hand in hand. To come into either KU or Duke, it would take a special player to be worthy of a role as a senior+ who would have to learn new disciplines and be respectful of either program's place in the universe. I, personally, can't see a fit for a player who wants to fulfill a desire to be part of an iconic program for his last year as a "student-athlete". If he was the final puzzle piece to a Final Four championship, maybe it would make some sense. But, the 2013-14 season is far from that point, even if we do get Wiggins. Just let Black follow his fantasy elsewhere please. But, there is someone in Memphis who could fit in at KU. Pastner could possibly fill Joe Dooley's seat if he was interested. He could be mentored by the best in the biz and end up being a very respectable top program coach in a few years.

6 years, 1 month ago

Report

jay381

Pastner was given an extension and pay raise as soon as USC rumors began to surface. I agree he would do more than fill Dooley's shoes and would benefit with the instruction of Self. However, given he was at 1.7 million prior to the extension and raise he has passed by the assistant position anywhere. Living here he will be a great coach and hopefully at a better place than Memphis. He is a recruiting dynamo. Given this is Memphis he has the 3rd ranked (depending on the service but for sure top 5) recruiting class next year.

6 years, 1 month ago

But, will he be a force to reckon with in the conference formerly known as The Big East? Yes, he has recruited some good players. But, how far has he gone in the NCAA's with that talent? With HCBS's help, he could name his salary in most top 25 programs.

I have read ridiculous posts in the past, but this take the cake. Why would any head coach at a major college program who 1) is making nearly 2 million annually, 2) went 31-5 and 16-0 in conference play, 3) has the second or third (depending on the ranking organization) best recruiting class in 2013, and is preseason ranked ahead of KU in the ESPN poll become an assistant coach who would make $250,000. On a radio interview on ESPN he comes across as very bright, articulate, and dynamic. I would consider him a strong candidate as head coach at KU if the dreaded day comes when Self retires or even worse moves to the NBA.
